How the split is worked out

needs = income × 50% · wants = income × 30% · savings = income × 20%

Needs are what you can’t skip: rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, getting to work, insurance, minimum loan payments. Wants are the rest of life: eating out, holidays, subscriptions, most shopping. Savings includes paying down debt faster than the minimum.

Use your net income, what arrives after tax. The rule is a starting point, not a law: with high rent, the needs share grows, and the calculator shows a split that works with it.

A worked example

You take home €3,200 a month. Needs get €1,600, wants €960 and savings €640. Your rent is €850, which is 26.6% of your income, so the needs half leaves €750 for groceries, bills and transport.
