How the target is worked out
target = essential monthly expenses × months · still to save = target − already saved · months to go = still to save ÷ monthly amount, rounded up
Essential means what you would keep paying if your income stopped tomorrow: rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, transport, insurance, medicine, minimum loan payments. Leave out eating out, holidays and the subscriptions you’d pause.
How many months: 3 is a common floor with a steady salary, 6 is the usual default, and people with irregular income, freelancers included, often aim for 6 to 12.
A worked example
Your essentials come to €1,250 a month. Six months of cover is €7,500. You’ve saved €450, so €7,050 is still to go. At €300 a month that’s 23.5 months, so 24 months. These are the amounts the calculator opens with.
