How much should I save for a holiday?
Tell us who is going, for how long and what you expect to spend. We work out what the trip costs and what to put aside each month until you leave.
Everyone who is travelling.
Nights you sleep away from home.
A flight or train ticket. For a car, split the petrol and tolls by the number of people.
The price of the room or apartment for one night.
Food, local transport and activities. Not accommodation.
Insurance, a rental car, souvenirs: anything else for the whole trip.
The day you leave.

How the figure is worked out
trip cost = people × transport + nights × accommodation + people × daily spending × (nights + 1) + extras
Daily spending counts nights + 1 days, because a 7-night trip is 8 days away from home. Accommodation is the price for the whole group, so it isn’t multiplied by the number of people.
per month = (trip cost − already saved) ÷ months until you leave, rounded up · per week = per month × 12 ÷ 52
Months are whole calendar months from today to your departure date. Rounding up means that setting the amount aside never leaves you a few cents short.
A worked example
Two people, 7 nights, leaving in six months. Transport is €150 each, so €300. The room is €90 a night: €630. Each person spends €50 a day on food, local transport and activities, for 8 days: 2 × €50 × 8 = €800. Extras are €100.
The trip costs €300 + €630 + €800 + €100 = €1,830. You have €300 saved, so €1,530 is still to come. Over six months that is €255.00 a month, or €58.85 a week. These are the amounts the calculator opens with.
What if the trip is less than a month away?
Then there is no monthly plan to make. The calculator shows the whole amount you still need, and a weekly figure if you have at least a week. If the date is today or in the past, it asks for a new one.
How do I estimate the daily spending?
Start from what you spend on an ordinary day at home on food and getting around, then adjust for the destination: eating out at every meal costs more than cooking. Add any activities you have already planned. If you’re unsure, run the calculator twice, once with a cautious figure and once with a generous one.
What if I already have enough saved?
The calculator says so and shows what is left over. The Extras field is a good place for a small cushion for the things nobody plans.
